This varied yet demanding circular hike around the Rosengarten massif is one of the most impressive tours in the region. The circuit around this striking Dolomite massif offers an intense nature experience with numerous scenic highlights. If you want to experience the unique mountain world of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites up close, this tour is exactly right for you. Following in the footsteps of King Laurin, the panoramic high-altitude hike leads you around the Rosengarten group. In total, you will cover around 12 kilometers and approximately 800 meters of elevation gain. The route passes over Tschagerjoch and Cigolade Pass and follows sections of the Hirzel trail. On the return, impressive panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys continuously unfold, showcasing the diversity of this extraordinary landscape.

Directions

The starting point is St. Zyprian, from where the Tiers Cabrio cable car takes you comfortably uphill. You then continue with the König Laurin I & II gondolas into the high alpine terrain. Once at the top, the hike begins on mountain trail no. 550 toward Tschagerjoch (2630 m). At first, the trail runs along a rocky ridge secured with steel cables. The terrain briefly becomes easier before a steep ascent between rugged rock faces leads up to the pass. Some sections are equipped with wooden planks and cables. This is followed by a steep descent along the slope until reaching a junction. From there, trail no. 541 leads to Cigolade Pass (2550 m). The route continues with gentle ups and downs across scree and gravel slopes below jagged rock faces and then climbs rather steeply to the pass. One section is secured with a steel cable, and a ladder must be climbed. During the ascent, impressive views open up toward Val di Fassa and Vajol Valley. Afterwards, a stony path descends gently to a striking rock gateway that opens into a wide Dolomite landscape. Following trail no. 541, you reach the connection to trail no. 549. Shortly after, you arrive at the Christomannos Monument, a 2.70-meter-high bronze eagle. From here, follow the upper Hirzel trail (no. 549), which is partly secured with steel cables and leads back to the starting point near the mountain station. Alternatively, from the monument, you can take the lower Hirzel trail (no. 539) along with trails no. 552 and no. 549, which is less demanding but equally popular.
